i know i’ve promised you at least 2 tour features per month and i broke that promise in december. i got sick and busy with the holidays, so while i prepare my next post, i’m giving you this little one to hold you over. i’m not recapping 2024 or making an ins and outs list, but i will tell you the places i hope to go this year. think of this as a sneak peak at future hauskeeping posts and perhaps some travel inspo for you.
starting with…
MEXICO CITY
i have been wanting to go here for years to see the works of one of my favorite architects, luis barragán. there is also an incredible airbnb i’ve been dying to stay at, designed by another mexican architect, javier senosiain. it’s called quetzalcoatl's nest and it’s a snake, how could i not want to stay there?
COLUMBUS, INDIANA
if you’re wondering why i would ever want to go to indiana, you obviously are not familiar with the architectural haven that is columbus. if you’ve never heard of it, a good introduction would be the 2017 film columbus. another place i’ve been wanting to go for years and kind of embarrassed i haven’t been to yet considering it’s only a 5 hour drive from me. 2025 will be my year <3 the most famous piece of architecture there is probably eero saarinen’s miller house. but there are beautiful buildings all around town.
ARIZONA
i don’t really want to go to arizona, but i do really want to see frank lloyd wright’s taliesin west. there’s also the weird little experimental town called arcosanti. my mom told me about this place probably 10 years ago and it’s always been in the back of my mind. they have a hotel you can stay at, which i will be doing. there’s also the arizona biltmore hotel that people mistakenly credit to being a FLW design. it was designed by albert chase mcarthur but wright did on-site consulting for a few months. another place on my arizona list is the chapel of the holy cross in sedona.
PALM SPRINGS
if you’re looking to take a trip to palm springs next month, their infamous modernism week is the 13-23. i will not be attending, but if i do end up going to arizona, i will probably turn it into an arizona → palm springs → los angeles trip. (i’ve already been to all of the good architecture spots in LA so i won’t be talking about it, but if you want my recommendation list, message me!) there’s a ton of architecture to check out in palm springs, but #1 on my list is albert frey’s frey house II. and i would love to stay at the lautner compound or this walter s. white designed airbnb.
MICHIGAN
michigan seems to have mid-century modern/modernist architecture all over the state. this is likely why i have yet to make a michigan architecture trip. it’s not really something i’ll be able to knockout in a weekend, maybe i just need to make multiple trips. but places worth noting are: the saarinen house, FLW’s smith house near detroit, and the alden b. dow home & studio in midland. midland has a ton of mid-century architecture but i think most are private homes. there are also at least 3 FLW airbnbs. i may be missing some, but there’s the goetsch–winckler house (they do tours too), the eppstein house, and the palmer house.
MISCELLANEOUS
these aren’t high priorities for me because they’re one offs and not something i’d make an entire trip out of, but figured i would mention them in case any of you are nearby.
the gropius house in lincoln, massachusetts
FLW’s seth peterson cottage in reedsburg, wisconsin
georgia o’keeffe’s home & studio in abiquiu, new mexico
the noguchi playscape in atlanta, georgia
the paul rudolph institute in new york, new york
the big duck in long island, new york
if you have any recommendations for me in any of the cities above, or just in general, please let me know!

Mexico City has beautiful buildings. During the reign of Porfirio Diaz, obsessed with France, he implemented their architectural design (Bellas Artes, Museo Nacional del Arte, etc.). San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, is also a good place to visit see baroque buildings. Merida, Yucatan, is starting to be a reference for modern colonial/artisanal style homes. There is a YouTube channel called "Open Plan" that shows modern Mexican architecture if you are interested in visiting some of the houses shown there.
Greetings from Mexico :) I hope you enjoy your trip if you decide to come visit someday.
Excellent choices that are slated for the future, thank you again Zoe!
I also would recommend taking a look at the Russel and Mary Wright Studio in Putnam County NY. Very early Mid Century, yet carries the aesthetic design and simplicity.
