i always say that my love language is sending people zillow links, but i’m usually not brave enough to actually do it to someone in a romantic, i have a crush on you and this house reminds me of you, way. so instead, i send them all to my mom. now i’m going to share them with you, maybe you will pass them along to someone you love. or maybe one of you will buy one of these houses. if you do, please invite me over sometime.
this is also an ode to my favorite instagram account of all time, save mid mod. RIP <3 ever since they stopped posting, i have browsed zillow daily, trying to find these hidden gem houses. turns out, there are so many of them all over the country!
in my ideal world, i’d only share houses that are in their original condition, but those are unfortunately getting harder and harder to find. if you rip out a mid-century kitchen or bath to put in some generic home depot garbage, you will not see heaven.
anyway, here are my recent favorites:
3715 FRY AVE, TYLER, TX
this house looks like a movie or tv set of a mid-century modern house, complete with my absolute dream feature: terrazzo floors. this is what a kitchen should look like. i hate those bowl sinks in the green tiled bathroom, but everything else is pretty much perfect.
101 POINT BREEZE PL, PITTSBURGH, PA
this is kind of a clean slate of a house, but i really love the details it has. the slate flooring entryway, the cork kitchen floor, and the colored tile bathrooms. the pink one literally made me gasp. oh, and another perfect, original kitchen (except for the fridge just floating there by itself lol)
11185 HAWTHORNE DR, GALESBURG, MI
there’s always at least one frank lloyd wright house on the market. this one is currently my favorite. pretty classic usonian home. i can’t tell if that restaurant booth seating situation in the kitchen/dining area is original or not. probably not? either way, i hate it. as much as i love FLW, i think living in one of these houses would be quite hard unless you have all of the original furniture. anything else in them just looks silly.
54 PROSPECT ST, SOMERVILLE, NJ
this house has some confusing parts to it, like the kitchen that looks partly original? and those random glass blocks and the sad bathrooms. but the main living space with all of those windows and stone fireplace are very beautiful. and i really love the blue carpet and marble fireplace in the primary bedroom.
6161 MARQUETTE PL, NEW ORLEANS, LA
if you have $2 million dollars, i have the perfect house for you. not much to say about this one, the pictures speak for themselves and i can’t keep saying the word “perfect.”
15 TERN ST, NEW ORLEANS, LA
ok wait, i lied. this might be the more perfect $2M house. and it’s coincidentally also in new orleans. this was the most recent one i texted my mom about. her favorite part is the pink kitchen. mine is the sea foam green ceiling in the living room. or the giant round built-in ceiling lamp over the dining table. or literally every single other thing about it because it is all so good.
40 FROTHINGHAM XING, LENOX, MA
i loooooooove the wood paneling on the ceiling in this house so much that it *almost* makes up for those horrific kitchen cabinets. also, i think people are surprised when they hear this from me, but i’m kind of obsessed when a house has a crazy bright colored carpet like the teal one in the sunroom of this house. would i leave it if i bought the house? i’m not sure but it’s so fun.
459 ARTIST DR, NASHVILLE, IN
this house needs a little more love than the others so far, but it has so much potential. and, as far as i can tell, hasn’t been updated at all. it’s very cute and on a beautiful little plot of land.
307 S CHADWICK ST, PHILADELPHIA, PA
if you follow me on twitter, you have already seen me talk about this townhouse. i just wanted to point out that it’s still available, in case anyone would like to buy it for me.
29252 SUMMERWOOD RD, FARMINGTON HILLS, MI
this more modernist, international style kind of house is my dream house. you have to ignore the absolute embarrassment of furniture and decor in the photos though. it almost ruins the house. i swear there’s a good house under there.
1003 LUCY ST, TALLAHASSEE, FL
the kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms of this house are all kind of terrible but the main living space is so good, i would simply never leave it. that light!!!! that fireplace!!!!!!!!!
1480 NW ORION DR, PULLMAN, WA
another classic. the prettiest wood and windows. i love her.
5420 MANITOU ROAD, LITTLETON, CO
this house feels like it needs a little bit too much work for the price, but i’m not familiar with the location so maybe it’s a deal? the fireplace and windows in that living room are so special though. and that mirrored bedroom wall? lol fun…
3288 BREMERTON RD, PEPPER PIKE, OH
i had to include this ohio one even though it’s not exactly my preferred style. i think with better furniture it could be really nice. those terrazzo stairs and floors are incredible. i know whoever buys this house is going to get rid of that carpeted bed platform and that makes me deeply sad. we must preserve these weirdo houses.
10801 CHALON RD, LOS ANGELES, CA
saved the best for last, one of my favorite houses in the world: richard neutra’s brown house. it was previously owned by thom brown (named after a different brown) who sold it to ryan murphy. it looks like he only owned it for 4 years. why you would ever part ways with this house is beyond me. i would do literally anything to live here. if you have $30M, let’s talk.
xoxo & ttys
(i swear i’m working on another house tour post. this month has just been horrible and difficult for me, i got covid again and it turned my brain and body into a bowl of soup.)
woooooowiiieeee! going to go look at those new orleans houses - George Saunders was the best
Excellent compilation as always!
